Help shape the future of wastewater treatment in Cardwell

We are seeking feedback from Cardwell residents, property owners and business owners/operators to better understand community interest in the potential future expansion of a sewerage network into Cardwell.

This is an early-stage survey. No decisions have been made.

Your feedback will help inform Council's next steps, including whether further investigation, detailed planning and funding opportunities should be explored.

Why are we asking?

Council recently constructed the Cardwell Sewerage Treatment Plant, which currently services the Port Hinchinbrook area and has the capacity to service additional areas of Cardwell.

Most properties currently use septic tanks or on-site treatment systems. As these systems age, they can require increased maintenance and may impact the environment if they fail.

With Cardwell located alongside sensitive coastal environments and the Great Barrier Reef, long term wastewater management is an important consideration.

Your feedback will help us understand:

  • Your interest in connecting to a sewerage network.
  • Your current wastewater system.
  • Your key concerns (including costs, disruptions and property impacts).
  • What matters to you most when considering the potential future wastewater infrastructure.
