Cassowary Coast, home to beautiful beaches like Etty Bay, Mission Beach, and Kurrimine Beach, attracts visitors year-round. But the presence of marine stingers like box jellyfish that pose a safety risk. To address this, stinger nets have been installed in key locations, providing a safer swimming environment.

However, hiring and operating these nets comes at a significant cost. Each year the cost to hire and operate the nets is over $500,000 including the seasonal lifeguard patrols. As these costs impact local ratepayers, it’s vital for the community to have a voice in the future of this service.

This consultation aims to involve the local community, tourists, and stakeholders in understanding the value of this service, fostering a stronger sense of ownership and responsibility toward beach safety.
