Port Hinchinbrook Dredging Update – April 2025

10 April 2025

Cassowary Coast Regional Council is continuing to progress dredging works at Port Hinchinbrook. Here’s a quick update on what’s happening:

  • Pre and post emergency dredging surveys have confirmed the net removal of 990m3 of wet sediment and the design profile of + 0.5m has been achieved.
  • The 351m3 of dry sediment from the emergency dredging has now been transported to Lemura Sand Company Pty Ltd Recycling and Rehab facility Cairns resulting in a significant saving to the project.
  • The large GEO Bags have been removed from the carpark and temporary fencing used during the works will be removed on Monday 14 April, meaning both ramps will be accessible.
  • The private houseboat has been removed, and contractors are now focussed on removal of the rock access pad that was installed to assist with removal.
  • AMA have commenced the post flooding debris removal, and this work is expected to continue over the next fortnight.
  • Public toilets will be closed to the public until June for repairs, temporary toilets have been placed onsite for public use.
  • The status of negotiations by Economic Development Queensland about the acquisition of properties held by Passage Holdings (In liquidation) have been queried through meetings and correspondence with the Queensland Government.

What’s next?

  • Council is committed to addressing the challenges caused by flooding and ensuring the safety and recovery of Cardwell and Port Hinchinbrook.
  • An application for a temporary environmental approval has been prepared for submission to the Department along with a variation for the emergency funding through the Australian Government.
  • We will continue advocating to the Queensland Government for a sustainable, long-term dredging plan that minimises financial risks to Cassowary Coast ratepayers.
