Port Hinchinbrook Sewerage Treatment Plant Update

26 February 2025

Following the recent flooding event, we wish to provide a public update on the current status of the Port Hinchinbrook Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP).

The STP is currently operating in an interim capacity as we await the completion of the contractor’s insurance assessments. These assessments will help determine the required repairs and parts needed to ensure the plant’s long-term operation and functionality.

The damage sustained primarily affects the mechanical and electrical components of the facility, beyond just the electrical board. Council is actively monitoring the situation and taking the necessary steps to address the repairs.

While the facility was designed to exceed Q100 flooding standards, Council is committed to exploring opportunities for betterment works. As we await the final insurance reports, we are evaluating potential preventative measures to incorporate into the rebuilding process, aiming to strengthen the plant’s resilience moving forward. Additionally, we are seeking funding opportunities to support these improvements.

We have submitted a request for disaster-related funding to cover the costs associated with the transportation of sewerage to Tully and other interim measures, ensuring we meet regulatory requirements and continue to serve the community effectively.

Council remains dedicated to ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the Port Hinchinbrook Sewerage Treatment Plant. We will provide further updates as more information becomes available and appreciate the community's patience and understanding as we work through these challenges.

For any additional enquiries, please contact Council directly.
